Inspired by Ikat textiles native to Sumba Island, Indonesia.

Ikat weaving is a basic skill that is important to have as a Sumbanese woman, and it is a sign of success if a mother has taught her daughter how to weave skillfully. Passing this along to each generation is a way of preserving their culture.

Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that employs resist dyeing on the yarns prior to dyeing and weaving the fabric. In ikat the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed.

Our Sumba Warrior Collection is in collaboration with Mary Tilson, a wonderful yogi, world traveler, and Wellness Retreat Leader at Nihi Sumba, a Beachfront Resort in Sumba Island, Indonesia.

Mary reached out to Joriki after discovering we created yoga clothes that gave back. We were so excited when she asked us to partner on a collection that was inspired by cultural prints in Sumba Island and that went back to the community.

A percentage of sales from our Sumba Warrior line goes directly to The Sumba Foundation. The foundation is deeply committed to lessening the consequences of poverty on the island of Sumba. They aim to provide humanitarian aid by fostering village-based projects that impact health, education, water, and income-generation. All of this is done while preserving and respecting the fragile culture and traditions of the Sumbanese people.
